Drawing 1

This course will engage students in sequential learning experiences that provide a foundation in drawing using a variety of media and techniques in both black and white and in color. Students will explore line quality, the effects of light and shadow, and expressive uses of value and perspective. Lessons will involve observational drawings as well as inventive techniques. Reference to art history and contemporary approaches to drawing  will be explored. Instruction and practice in the critique process will be integrated into this course.

Painting 1

Students will be introduced to painting through a variety of lessons in color theory, media, materials and painting techniques. Lessons in composition and rendering of form will provide the student a means for self-expression. Tempera, acrylic, inks, and watercolor will be some of the media used to solve problems in realism and abstraction. Instruction and practice in the critique process will be integrated into this course.

Ceramics 2

This course is a continuation of Ceramics 1, but with more emphasis on quality and workmanship. Students will continue to develop and refine their skills using the potter’s wheel and with other forming techniques. The work of historical and contemporary artists will be discussed, explored and analyzed. Instruction and practice in the critique process will be integrated into this course. A sketchbook is required.

Drawing 2

1st or 2nd Semester
This course builds upon the skills and concepts developed in Drawing 1. Students will continue to refine their observational and technical skills using a variety of media and compositional approaches.
There will be a strong emphasis on portraits and the human form. Art history, art criticism and analysis will be integrated into this course. A sketchbook and written work are required. Course maybe taken more than once.

Painting 2

1st or 2nd Semester
This course emphasizes the use of painting as a means of self-expression. Students will continue to develop technical skills in the areas of drawing, watercolor, acrylics, oils, and collage. Art history, art criticism and analysis will be integrated into this course. A sketchbook and written papers are required. Course may be taken more than once.
Prerequisite: Painting 1

Ceramics 3 & 4

CERAMICS 3 
1st or 2nd Semester
Students in Ceramics 3 will independently focus on clay as a means of creative self-expression
through advanced form construction, hand building and decorating techniques. Students will continue
to develop throwing skills on the potter’s wheel and have the opportunity to work with mid-range clay bodies. Instruction and practice in the critique process will be integrated into this course. A sketchbook is required.
Prerequisite: Ceramics 2


CERAMICS 4 
1st or 2nd Semester
This is a continuation of Ceramics 3. Students at this advanced level will continue to refine their technical skills both on the potter’s wheel and in other hand-building techniques. Students will create larger, more complex functional and sculptural forms. Emphasis will be on the quality of the work, aesthetics, and individual expression. Students will continue to experiment with glazes and surface
decoration. A variety of clay bodies will be used. Instruction and practice in the critique process will be integrated into this course. A research workbook, sketchbook and journal are required for this course.
Course may be taken more than once.

Develop your 2-D skills through materials and processes such as graphic design, photography, collage, printmaking, fashion illustration, collage, and others. You’ll create artwork that reflects your own ideas and skills and what you’ve learned.

3D Portfolio;

Develop 3-D skills in materials and processes, such as sculpture, architectural rendering and models, metal work, ceramics, glass work, and others. You’ll create artwork that reflects your own ideas and skills and what you’ve learned.
